This business project began under the stewardship of Francisco dos Santos “Canteiro”, born in 1903 and responsible for passing on to his family the passion of working with stone and of perfection.
After learning the art for many years with his father-in-law, Francisco dos Santos, in 1966 Daniel Filipe invited his brothers to establish the company Manuel Rafael Filipe e Irmãos, Lda., also known as “Rafaéis”, and operate several quarries in the limestone region. The company’s sawing facility quarried its own limestones and that of other companies, selling the product in slabs. Back in the 1980s it was already one of the key references in the stone industry on central Portugal.
In 1987, his son Alfredo Filipe began a limestone quarrying project of his own – Filipedra, Indústria de Mármores, Lda. –, one of the first companies in Portugal to invest in the stone furniture business. In the same year, the company exported the first stone blocks to Asia, entering the Chinese market in 1998.
However, because the size of the Filipedra quarry did not tally with the requirements of the Chinese market, improvements had to be made to the internal organisation and a more effective cooperation had to be implemented.
As a result of a new competitive strategy, 2002 saw the establishment of Filstone - Comércio de Rochas, Lda. Created by Ricardo (the grandson), Alfredo (the father) and Filipe (the grandfather), the company incorporates, in a cooperative approach, the production of various quarries offering similar products, thus achieving the size and capacity suited to the Chinese market requirements.
In 2004 with the opening of the offices in Shanghai, Filstone embarked on its internationalisation process: 125 locally established architects and several public figures and clients, maintaining a close relationship with clients, supporting the promotion of products, and developing a win-win relationship.
Two years later, Filstone entered into a partnership with Kingstar and took nine new products from various Portuguese limestone quarries to China, in just three years!
In 2008, following the changes that took place in the trading and cooperative business in Portugal, Filstone purchased a quarry in Casal Farto, Fátima.
Four years later, having bought new land for the Kingstar facility in Dafeng, Shanghai, we began the construction project and opened the first project phase two years later.
Today we know for sure that are on the right track.
Our quarry has an extraction capacity of about 30 000m3/year, offering quality and supplying quantities under increasingly tighter deadlines.
Our goal is to be closer to our clients and to trading intermediaries: the goal right now is to match Portugal’s extraction capacity to China’s processing capacity in order to give our partners the best solutions.
We want to be closer to you, to give you the best products. We want to continue to make history with you
